The former Atlantis water park on Scarborough’s North Bay, once one of the coastal towns best loved local attractions, is set to be demolished in the next couple of months as part Scarborough’s new Sands development.
Work is due to start in the next couple of weeks on the clearance of the former Atlantis site and tenders for the work have been filed with Benchmark Leisure, developers of The Sands.
Scarborough’s Atlantis water park was loved by generations of visitors but in recent years it has fallen into serious disrepair with one local resident describing it as “the worst view in Scarborough“.
Originally the North Bay swimming pool was opened in July 1938 and closed its doors for the final time in 2007. At one time its giant slides were the biggest in Europe!
It is hoped that a new covered water park will be included as part of the overall Sands development, with the Burniston Road car park being earmarked as a possible location for this facility.
Full details of Scarborough’s new leisure facility have yet to be revealed but they could include a fun pool with water chutes, a separate swimming pool and other facilities such as steam rooms and a sauna.
Although this new plan differs from the original plans released some time ago, the announcement is great news for both residents and future visitors to Scarborough Hotels.
The work on the old Atlantis site is due to start in May and David Rhodes, who is company director of Benchmark Leisure said:
” We aim to finish the work as soon as possible and anticipate it will be finished in June. The park’s two big water slides will be coming down as they are probably the things that people want removing the most because they have become an eyesore. The land they’re on will then be landscaped.”
Benchmark Leisure has submitted a new planning application for the old Atlantis site on Scarborough’s North Bay. The proposals include building two large leisure facilities, incorporating more shops, a mini adventure golf course and a number of other local attractions to enjoy.
It is hoped that when the site is cleared and developed that it will be a real boost to Scarborough and it’s tourism industry.
The completion date for this first stage of the development is expected to be 26 June.
